William T. ‘Rick’ Ward, 78, of Toone, passed away Thursday afternoon, November 22 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
The husband of Frances Ozment Ward, who survives, he was a retired First Sergeant with the US Army, retiring after 20 years of service. While in the military, he worked in the Army Medical Corp from 1949-1970 and participated in the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and was stationed in Germany, Panama and Lebanon. Mr. Ward was a member of the Green Berets, the 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne and the 187th Airborne. He was a master parachutist, and among the many honors he received were the Combat Medical Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, four Good Conduct Medals, a sharpshooter badge, and a parachute badge. He was born in Charleston, SC on February 28, 1929, son of the late William Norman Ward and Carrie Anderson Ward and lived in Clarendon, NC until his high school graduation. He was a graduate of Lambuth University and enjoyed hunting, fishing and walking. Mr. Ward was a member of Toone Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Supervisor and taught the boys Sunday School class.
In addition to his wife, whom he married on December 31, 1951, survivors include a daughter, Vicki Ward Ridenhour and her husband, Perry, of Jackson; three sisters, Ann Veronee of Cocoa, Fla., Margaret Atcherly of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Dean Stanley of Longview, Tex.; and a brother, Charles Ward of Clarendon, NC.
