Mr. William Brodey Blakely, Jr., age 80, owner and operator of Blakely's Nursery, passed away Saturday afternoon at Bells Nursing Home and Rehabilitation.
Brodey was born in Madison County, TN on June 6, 1943, son of the late William Brodey Sr. and Vernie Banks Blakely. He grew up in Jackson in the Harts Bridge Community and was a graduate of Southside High School. He then attended Lambuth College and studied Horticulture and Landscape Design.
He ultimately began working and running his family's business Blakely's Nursery (established in 1922). He retired and closed the business in 1999 but continued designing. He had a passion for unusual plants and landscape design and never drew the same plan twice.
He married Linda Cothren Johnson on May 26, 1990 and they enjoyed their many years of marriage and especially spending time traveling by train or taking day trips by car.
He was proud of his children and enjoyed his growing family or grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as "Papaw."
He was a member of the Meridian Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Linda Blakely of Jackson; a son Randall "Randy" Carson Blakely (Tonya) of Pinson; a daughter Aimee Blakely Pruitt Oxley (Philip Schultz) of Jackson; two stepsons James Randall "Randy" Johnson of Henderson and Reggie Lynn Johnson (Debra) of Sylvania, GA; ten grandchildren Kaleigh Pruitt, Liam Oxley, Logan Blakely, Elizabeth Landers, Emma Hudgins, Sadie Evans, Chad Johnson, Chase Johnson, Cassie Mosely (Austin) of Paris, TN, Courtney Brown (Aaron) of Hillsborough, TN; and six great grandchildren Devin Johnson, Millie Kate Brown, Will Brown, Hunter Landers, Lexi Landers and Roscoe Landers.
