William "Chief" Bernard age 81 of Clearwater, Florida, passed from this life on Monday, October 7, 2019 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN.
Bernard was born January 28, 1938 in Connecticut, to Gean and Marie Bernard. He served in the US Air Force for 27 years attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant where he worked as a Personnel Specialist, gaining the nickname "Chief." He was married to his beloved wife Charlotte Melton from December 31, 1989 until she passed on May 17, 2016. Together they attended Catholic services and spent time playing games and gaining friendships as she resided in nursing care in Clearwater. Following her death he continued visiting their friends until he came to visit his stepson John Udall Jr. and wife Shelly in Bolivar. After retiring, he managed the NCO Club, worked for the State of Florida and was a shuttle driver for a well known car dealership. "Chief" was an avid golfer, a committed member of the American Legion and the Sun Coast Dixieland Jazz Society.
Bernard is survived by his stepson John Joseph Udall, Jr. (Shelly) of Bolivar; a stepdaughter Margaret Shacklady (William) of O'Fallon, IL; 5 step grandchildren, Allie Martin, John Joseph Udall III (Nicole), Jennifer Shacklady, William Shacklady (Missy), Dustin Baker, and Katherine Bigelow (Chris); and by 6 step great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Eli, Madison, and Harper Udall, Palmer Shacklady, and Mason Bigelow.
Graveside services will be held at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee on October 22, 2019 with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar in charge.
