Colonel Wilbert A. Black, age 93 of Memphis, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013 at Kirby Pines Retirement Estates in Memphis, where he was a resident.
Colonel Black retired from the United States Air Force in 1975 after serving 32 years on Active Duty as a Hospital Administrator. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2010 after 67 years of marriage. He was a member of the Gilbert Sunday School Class, Germantown United Methodist Church, 32d Degree Mason, Valley of Harrisbury, PA, Order of the Eastern Star, Air Force Association and military Officers ASsociation of America. He graduated from Grand Junction High School and continued his education at the University of Maryland.
His military assignments were in Headquarters, US Air Force, Washington, DC, Italy, Germany, England and various US Air Force Bases in the United States. For his services, some medals awarded were the Legion of Merit, AF Meritorious Service Award, AF Commendation medal and Medal for Humane Action during the Berlin Airlift in 1949.
He is survived by two children, daughter, Dale Parrish, Jackson, TN and son, Dan, Spicewood, TX; and a granddaughter, Emily Clark, Austin, TX.
Memorial services will be held at Germantown United Methodist Church at 11:30 AM Thursday, May 16, 2013, with interment in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar have charge. Any memorials may be sent to Germantown United Methodist Church or to the donor's choice.
