W. G. Reed was born December 25, 1932 in Chewalla, TN the son of the late Edgar and Martha Carter Reed.
He was united in marriage to Linda Gee on November 2, 1955.
W.G. Reed graduated from Ramer High School in 1953. After graduation, he joined the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. When he returned home, he attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College in Booneville, MS earning an Associate Arts degree.
Mr. Reed was the Postmaster in Chewalla, Tennessee before moving to Memphis to work for the Procurement Branch Division of the United States Postal Service. Before retirement from the postal service he enjoyed bowling, fishing, golf, playing cards with friends, and listening to good music especially country. He like the Tennessee Vols and most often left the house wearing a UT polo shirt and cap. He was a skilled woodworker, always giving of his talents and time.
Popa Reed, as he was affectionately called by his family, always practiced good manners making sure his children and grandchildren always said "please" and "thank you' even when making the simplest request.
He was a good provider for his family, devoted husband and father - his children felt abundantly blessed to have had such a wonderful Dad and was honored to have called him Dad.
Mr. Reed passed peacefully in his home on March 19, 2020 with his caring wife of 64 years by his side. He was 87 Years, 2 Months, 23 Days. He is survived by his wife Linda (Gee) Reed of Memphis, TN; children, Kim Reed and wife Darlynn of Cookeville, TN, Abby Brewer and husband Ken of Cordova, TN, and Russell Reed of Key West , FL; three grandchildren, Adam Brewer and wife Allison of Hernando, MS, Benjamin Brewer of Knoxville, TN, Margaret LeFevre and husband Craig of Cookeville, TN; three great grandchildren, Eli, Sledge, and Wells; sister-in-law, Avis Reed; and many favorite nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Reed was preceded in death by .two brothers, Leonard Reed and wife Ollie, J.C. Reed; five sisters, Uila Reed, Mary Emma Crabb and husband Leonard, Gladys Butler and husband Vernice, Eddie Jo Kelley and husband Horace, Betty Dawson and husband Aaron.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all who have supported and prayed for them during this time of loss.
Due to the Corona Virus and the CDC Guidelines, the family will have a Private Graveside Service with the anticipation of gathering family and friends at a later date when we can share in our love for such a wonderful and kind gentleman, W.G. Reed.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: St. Jude Children's Hospital or American Diabetes Association.
