Dr. Wayne Haggard Mitchell, age 70, of Knoxville passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at his home after a courageous three year battle with cancer. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, the UT College of Dentistry, and the Orthodontic School of the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He was a dentist and orthodontist in the Army for twenty years and served as Head of the Orthodontic Departments in the Dental Clinics of Stuttgart, Germany, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and Anchorage, Alaska. He also was stationed in Georgia, Colorado, Missouri, and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Award. He retired to Knoxville in 2002 and enjoyed all UT sports. He was a member of the UT Library Friends Executive Committee and a Life Master in Duplicate Bridge. His other interests included worldwide traveling and acting as tour guide for friends visiting his favorite city of Hong Kong. He is survived by his mother, Cavelle Mitchell of Henderson, TN; his loving wife of 47 years, Jeannine; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and A.C. Stidham of Bethel Springs, TN; niece, Kim Stidham of Brandon, Mississippi.
