He was born and reared in Henderson, the son of the late John Markus and Lucy Tarpley Cherry. He attended schools in Henderson and graduated Chester County High School in 1935. He was married to Florine Massey in 1938. He worked for the County a few years and worked in the construction of the Milan Arsenal. He farmed and operated his own sawmill for over fifty years. He was an avid horse breeder and trainer, having trained and showed Tennessee Walking Horses. He rode in the first celebration at Shelbyville, in 1939. He was the owner of three world champions, Ko Chief in 1982, White Moon Lite 1998 and Cabin Creek Special in 1998 & 1999. He attended the celebration at Shelbyville nearly every year since 1939. He was a former member of the Lions Club and Charter Member of the Mid-South Horse Show Association. He carried the colors at Henderson Christmas Parades for over forty years and carried the flag at the Henderson Centennial Celebration. He was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ since 1928.
He is survived by his wife Florine Massey Cherry; two sons Billy Cherry and wife Barbara and Mickey Cherry and wife Sherri all of Henderson; and two grandchildren Shayne and Samantha Cherry and also a great grandson Jon Michael Cherry.
He was preceded in death by two sisters Mary Bernice Cherry and Fannie Sue Alexander and a brother John F. Cherry.
