Virtie Pauline Smith Bates was born September 22, 1923 in Waterloo, Alabama, the daughter of the late James Wesley and Beedie Alice Scott Smith. She was united in marriage to George W. Bates Sr. on September 24, 1941.



Mrs. Bates was a homemaker and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.



She departed this life on Friday, April 3, 2009 at E. C. M. Hospital in Florence, Alabama at the age of 85 Years, 6 Months, 12 Days.



She is survived by her husband, George W. Bates Sr. of Florence, AL; sons, George W. Bates Jr., James Vernon Bates, Edward E. Bates, Tommy Lee Bates, all of Florence, AL, Paul Howard Bates of Ocala, FL; daughters, Marilyn Riner, Connie Meadows, Brenda Marks, all of Florence, AL, Barbara Jean Clemmons of Lexington, AL; 28 Grandchildren, 48 Great-grandchildren, 9 Great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Allen of South Bend, IN, Lavern Lindsey of Savannah, TN; several nieces and nephews.



In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by a son, Randy Bates; four brothers, Curtis, Vernon, James E., and Roy Smith; sisters, Virgie Wallace, Mary Frances Smith, Effie Bates, Jimmie Vines, Lillian Hines; daughter-in-law, Pam Bates; great-grandson, Keanan Troy Pounders.



Services will be Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 1:30 PM at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel, Collinwood, Tennessee, with Johnny Ray Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery, Florence, Alabama with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County directing. Visitation will be Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 6 pm to 9 pm and Sunday, April 5, 2009 from noon until service time at the funeral home.



Pallbearers will be grandsons.
