Virginia (Tootsie) Fielder Hobbs Virginia Will Fielder Hobbs, age 105, of Waynesboro, TN, passed away March 18, 2016 at her home on South Main Street where she was born November 20, 1910. Mrs. Hobbs graduated from Wayne County High School in 1929, from Middle Tennessee State University in 1937, and from George Peabody College in 1950. She was a life-long member of Waynesboro First Christian Church.
Mrs. Hobbs, called “Tootsie” by many, retired in 1975 after 44 years in education. Her long career began in 1931 as a classroom teacher in Wayne County. In 1943 she went to Davidson County, Nashville, where she served in the classroom until 1950. That same year she received her Master’s Degree in Music Education and was immediately appointed a County Supervisor of Music. She continued her supervisory position when the consolidated county/city Metro System was formed. During her 25 years as a supervisor, Mrs. Hobbs was active in local and state music organizations, and her attendance at national conventions took her to cities throughout the United States.
Mrs. Hobbs was preceded in death by her husband, O.L. Hobbs; father, W.T. Fielder; mother, Roxie Merriman Fielder; infant brother, John Pitts Fielder; brother, James Harris Fielder; sister-in-law, Eva Wilburn Fielder; and nephew-in-law Sandy Allan Crye.
Survivors include beloved nieces, Mary Cynthia Diamond and husband, Gerald of Shawnee, KS, and Virginia Dodge Fielder of Boone, NC; great-niece, Camille Diamond Krebs and husband, Michael of Brooklyn, NY; great-nephews, David Harris Diamond of Merriam, KS and Andrew Frank Diamond of Scottsdale, AZ; and great-great-nephew, Samuel Harris Krebs and great-great-niece, Lillian Eve Krebs of Brooklyn, NY. She also is survived by first cousin, Robert Boyd of Duncanville, TX, and numerous other cousins descended from her mother, Roxie’s 13 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 3:30 pm at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel in Waynesboro, TN. Interment will be in Shields Cemetery, with Judy Griffin officiating and Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County, directing. Pallbearers include Herbert Brewer, Milton Byrd, Harry G. (Sonny) Corn, David Diamond, Bob Griffin and Charles Hasting. Honorary pallbearers include special loved ones, Sue A. Greer of Boone, NC; Nancy Morrow Meriwether of Nashville, TN; Gloria Harris Hasting, Lige Hollis and Ray Pulley all of Waynesboro; and caregivers, Dean Boyd of Deerfield, TN, and Frankie Sue Pulley, Iva Dell Shedd, Jan Berry and Vickie Pulley all of Waynesboro.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 1 pm until service time at the funeral home.
