SPENCER L. GOODWIN
Henderson, TN: Spencer Layfette Goodwin age 99 passed away January 21, 2021 at Henderson Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born March 2, 1921 in the Cabo Community of Chester County, the son of the late John Alvy Augusta and Jossie Jane Spencer Goodwin. He went to school in Chester County and graduated High School in Deering, MO in 1939. He married Grace Sharum of Doniphan, MO in 1942. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving aboard the USS Mahan in the South Pacific. The ship was sunk by being hit by nine suicide bombers on December 7, 1944, and ten served in Norfork, VA until 1945.
He owned and operated Edge Paper Box Manufacturing Company in Lynnwood, California until he sold the business in 1965.
He worked for All American Home Center for ten years.
They moved back to Chester County in 1976. He and Mrs. Goodwin owned and operated Goodwin Manufacturing Company. He retired in 1984.
He was a life member of the VFW Post 4844.
He was a member of the Enville Baptist Church.
Mr. Goodwin is survived by his wife, Grace Sharum Goodwin of Henderson; three sons, Bobby Spence Goodwin (Theresa) of Henderson, Dennis Owen Goodwin (Pamela) of Jackson and Gary Augusta Goodwin (Debbie) of Henderson; two grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Alvin Edward Goodwin and a sister, Mary Kathleen Swank.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue with Ron Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in Cabo Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday.
