She was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, the daughter of Henrietta Palmetier Bates and the late retired Lieutenant Colonel James Rafter Bates. Her father was a career army and she was raised all over the States. She graduated High School in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. She served in the U.S. Army from 1962 until 1964. She was stationed at West Point Military Academy. She was married to Robert Eugene McCage in 1963. They made their home in the Wilson School Community. She worked 36 years as a lab technician for F.M.Y. Orthodontics in Jackson. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband Eugene McCage; her mother Henrietta Palmetier Bates of St. Petersburg, FL; a son Vance Allen McCage of Jackson; four grandchildren Joey Anglin, Julia Flynn and husband Ryan, Logan McCage and Shelby McCage all of Jackson; one great grandchild Lainie Darnell of Jackson; and a brother James R. Bates, Jr. of Winter Park, IL.
