Roy Lafayette Mathews

Roy Lafayette Mathews, 86, of Walnut, Miss. died Thursday, July 28, 2005 at his home in Walnut.



The husband of Clarice Bodiford Mathews, who survives, he was a welder at Dover Elevator for 10 years, a truck driver, and bull dozer operator as well as a mechanic. Mr. Mathews was born July 8, 1919 in Middleton, son of the late Gary Sigman Mathews and Susie Paris Mathews and had lived in Walnut for over 60 years. He served in the U. S. Army during WWII under General Patton and became a military hero, earning two purple hearts. Mr. Mathews was also a member of the VFW.



Services were 4 PM Saturday, July 30, 2005 at Harmony Baptist Church in Walnut where he was a member. Burial was at Harmony Baptist Cemetery with Brian Tatum officiating. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar were in charge of arrangements.



In addition to his wife, whom he married June 11, 1943, survivors include one daughter, Judy Cutberth of Walnut, Miss.; one son, Bill Mathews of Dresden; two sisters, Janie Alice Pollini of Memphis and Sue York of Ripley, Miss.; two brothers, F. R. Mathews of Pomona, Cal. and Bobby Mathews of Tiplersville, Miss.; three grandchildren, Nicole Ragan, and Brian and Greg Mathews and four great grandchildren, Josie and Kaci Ragan and Karley and Kimberly Mathews.
