Mr. Smith died Friday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born in Corinth, Mississippi to the late James William and Myrtle Holloway Smith and lived his entire life in Pocahontas. He was a graduate of Middleton High School Class of 1970 and married Joanie Duncan on May 29, 1975. He was a tow boat captain for 35 years and was also owner of the Hatchie River Kennel, through which he sold beagle dogs all over the world. He was an avid rabbit hunter, raised quarter horses, enjoyed gardening and was proud to be an organ donor. He was a member of Pocahontas First Baptist Church where he served as deacon for 20 years.
He leaves his wife, Joanie Smith of Pocahontas; one daughter Amanda Russell and her husband, Chuck of Middleton; one son, Nick Smith of Pocahontas; a sister, Bernice Isom and her husband, Leon, Jr. of Middleton; three brothers, Sonny Smith and his wife, Geraldine of Middleton, Donnie Smith and his wife, Barbara and Jerry Smith and his wife, Glenda, all of Pocahontas; 8 nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews and 1 great-great nephew.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncle and aunt, Johnny and Dora Rainey.
