Richard was born in LaHarpe, Illinois the son of the late Glenn Wood and Willetta Miller Wood. His mother moved to East Peoria, Illinois and married Calvin Cummins.
Richard attended school at East Peoria Community High School graduating in 1962. He graduated from William Jewell College in liberty, MO in 1966 earning at B. A. in Sociology and was a four year letterman of the tennis team. He entered the Navy and graduated from Office Candidate School in 1967. He lived in California while serving in the Navy. He served two terms in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1977 as a LT with two Navy Achievement medals for the handling of a fire on board the USS Ramsey in 1973 and for the handling of an emergency helicopter landing on board the USS Mount McKinley in 1968. After his service he went to work for the U.S. Naval Shipyards in Long Beach where he was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation by the Chief of Naval Operations. He retired in 1996. He became disabled in 2001 and moved to Chester County, TN. He was a life time member of the First Baptist Church East Peoria.
He is survived by his step father, Calvin Cummins and brother, Bernie (Jill) Cummins, both of East Peoria, Illinois, a brother, William (Phyllis) Wood of Reagan, TN.
