Selmer, TN: Rev. Dewayne Whitman, age 80, retired minister, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 at McNairy County Healthcare in Selmer.
Mr. Whitman was born and reared in Chester County, the Montezuma Community, the son of the late Odie and Lela Brooks Whitman. He went to school in Chester County and then Clark Memorial College in Newton, MS and Blue Mountain College in Mississippi. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 and was headed overseas when the war ended. He was married to Joyce Rowland in 1946.
Rev. Whitman served churches in Newton, MS and Ripley, MS while in college. He then served Baptist Churches in Forest City, AR, Hornsby, TN, and Memphis, TN. They moved to Selmer and he served as Pastor at Adamsville, Cerro Gordo, and at New Harmony Baptist Church where he was serving when he suffered a stroke and became disabled from preaching.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Rowland Whitman of Selmer, a son Terry Whitman and wife Kate of North Little Rock, AR and one grandson Asa Whitman of North Little Rock. He has two surviving brothers; Rev. Bill Whitman of Three Way, TN and Larry Whitman of Henderson, and three sisters; Doris Hughes and Linda Gilchrist both of Memphis, and Barbara Pope of Germantown. He was preceeded in death by a brother Eugene Whitman.
