Charles Hughes Shelby was born in Hardin County on November 7, 1916, the son of the late Nathan C. and Lela Alexander Shelby. On June 5, 1940 he married Nona White. Charles and Nona were blessed with 2 sons-Charles Ray and Tommy Shelby. His faith was tested and proven when the Lord called both his sons home within a one year period.
During his life Charles wore several hats; he worked at a sawmill and later he managed or clerked for - D. J. Hughes, Gallaher's, Gammill's, Grady George's and Jerrold's Hardware. In 1968, he was elected hardin County Assessor of Property. "Uncle Charlie" as he was affectionately known in the courthouse, served from 1968-1976. While in office , he earned The State Board of Equalization Tennessee Assessor Certificate, 5 Assessment Procedure Performance Certificates form the University of Tennessee Center for Training and Career Development Institute, and completed the International Association of Assessing Officials Appraisal Techniques Course.
Reverend Shelby was a Methodist Minister for over 40 years. He started preaching in Hardin County at Russell's Chapel. He preached in Hardin, Wayne and Perry Counties at Eureka, Abrams Chapel, Lutts, Copeland, Cedar Grove, Whitwell and Oldtown Full Gospel Churches. Charles sang for over 20 years at various benefits and gatherings throughout our area with the Savannah Quartet.
Other than his wife Nona, he is survived by one of his 10 siblings, his brother, Warren Shelby. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Irene Shelby, his grandchildren, Charles "Chuck" Shelby and wife Mindy, James Raymond "Jamie" Shelby and his wife April and Sherry Denise Shelby. There are 6 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Harley, Hannah and Logan Shelby of Savannah and Levi and Shayna Stacy of Florence, AL. Grand and great-grandchildren by marriage are Bruce, Jennifer and Navi Weaver and Sheila, Justin, Austin, Michael and Matthew Franks.
Charles leaves a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who loved him dearly. He will truly be missed by all who were blessed to have known him.
Other than his parents and sons, those who preceded him in death were: brothers - Sherman, Hardy, Grady, Otis and Raymond Shelby and Sisters - Elsie Cagle, Rosella Allison, Jewel Shelby and Vivian Falls.
Charles Hughes Shelby departed this life on April 1st, 2008 at the age of 91 years 4 months 25 days.
Brother Shelby was very loved and much respected. He was man of dignity and he loved deeply. He loved his family and friends, but most of all he loved his Lord Jesus Christ. He is now with his precious sons but most importantly he is at rest and peace with his Saviour The Lord Jesus Christ.
When asked how he would like to be remembered he said "I would like to be remembered as a man who tried to help everybody, no matter their standing in life, nor their religious affiliation.
