Henderson, TN: Raymond Donald Phillips age 83, passed away June 16, 2010 at Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt.
He was born in Lakeland, FL and reared in Chester County, TN the son of the late Clarence N. and Mary Lucille Shannon Phillips. He graduated from Chester County High School in 1945 and went to U.T. Knoxville. He entered the U.S. Army in 1946. He was married to Taeko Fujita in 1960. She and their infant son Ray Dee Phillips passed away in 1963. He retired from the service in 1966 and moved back to the Montezuma Community. He married Lessie Henson Maness in 1973 and she passed away in 2004. He married Marjorie Louise Barker in 2007.
He attended Freed-Hardeman University and received his teaching degree in 1976. He taught at Chester County Junior High for fifteen years and one year at Chester County High School. He taught English, History and was involved in the starting of the first computer lab in the school system. He also farmed most of his life. He was well known for his peaches, apples and pecans that he raised and sold to the public. He loved to fish and in his earlier years he loved to bowl and later years worked crossword puzzles and was active in the Senior Citizens. He was Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Louise Barker Phillips and three stepsons, Elmer Maness and wife Susan all of Henderson, John Allen McGill and wife Nancy of Nashville and Bradley Mitchell McGill and wife Tracey of Pinson; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Opal Phillips of Washington, DC; one niece and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Thomas Phillips in 2000 and one niece.
