Mr. Carter died Friday afternoon at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
A life-long resident of Hardeman County, he was the son of the late William A. and Dessie King Carter. He married Norma Beatrice Russell on May 31, 1941. Mrs. Carter passed away February 15, 2007. Mr. Carter was a deacon of the New Union Baptist Church and a US Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Colonial Bakery in Jackson after 40 years. He especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He leaves two daughters, Barbara Carter Rowland of Spartanburg, SC and Carol Carter Grantham of Toone; one son, Douglas Carter of Knoxville; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey and Joey Rowland, Julie Gray, Scott, Stacey and Chris Grantham, Kevin, Brad and Kimberly Carter; eight great-grandchildren, Elise, Victoria, Christian and Samuel Rowland, Olivia and Matthew Gray, Eli and Ethan Grantham; three sisters, Opal LaCroix of Christiana, TN; Pearl Frye of Jackson and Lennie Cleek of Medon; and two brothers, Billy and Leroy Carter of Toone.
