Rachel Gladys (Granny Pud) Pickens
was born in Okolona, Mississippi on July 11, 1923 the daughter of the late Minnie Bell Howard Chambers and James Cleveland Chambers, a sharecropper and millwright.
On October 10, 1941 she was united in marriage to Marvin Harold Pickens, who preceded her in death on November 9, 2005.
During Ms. Pickens childhood she had lived in Okolona, Mississippi. She lived her teenage years near Shiloh Park and her adult life in the New Hope Community on the western edge of Hardin County. During her life she had worked on the family farm raising cotton, soy bean and hay. She was an excellent seamstress having made many clothes for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a second generation Shiloh quilter, having assisted in making many quilts at Shiloh Methodist Church. She enjoyed touring and sightseeing across the country with our senior citizens. She was a member of the New Hope Community Church.
Ms. Pickens departed this life on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the age of 85 years, 11 days.
Ms. Pickens is survived by a daughter: Doris Elaine Pickens Smith of Stantonville, Tennessee; three sons: Marvin Harold Pickens, Jr. of Henderson, Tennessee, Ronald Edward Pickens and Winston Dale Pickens both of Adamsville, Tennessee (New Hope Community); two sisters: Corda Ruth Chambers Rodgers of Shiloh, Tennessee and Dorothy Marie Chambers Beckham of Millington, Tennessee; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren on the way.
In addition to her husband and parents, Ms. Pickens was preceded in death by a daughter: Linda Jean Pickens; a brother: James Cleveland Chambers, Jr.; a grandson: James Harold Smith.
