Mr. Otho R. Smith, age 83 of Whiteville, departed this life Tuesday night, January 31, 2012 at Maplewood Healthcare Center in Jackson.
Mr. Smith was born in Whiteville June 10, 1928 to the late John James and Alice Velma Farris Smith. He was the widow of Ida Smith, who preceded him in death May 15, 2000. Having lived all his life in the Whiteville area, he worked for Western Mental Health Institute as a patient transport and supply officer. After 33 years of service there, he retired in 1987. He served his country in the United States Army from 1946 to 1947 and was a member of Parrans Chapel Baptist Church in Bolivar. Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing and playing Dominos and loved spending time with his dog, "Duke".
Mr. Smith leaves as his survivors two daughters, Donna Thompson and her husband Don of Cloverport and Alice Tosh and her husband Jerry of Vildo; a sister, Lillie Mae Hilliard of Oakland; a brother, Farris Smith of Lake Station, IN; three grandchildren, Tammy Howell, Danny Benard and Michael Benard; and five great-grandchildren, Chris Kelley, Nick Kelley, Bailey Benard, Brooke Benard and Michael Joseph Benard.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Jackson and Geraldine Hadley; and two brothers, Herman Smith and James Smith.
