Mrs. Bates passed away at the home of her son in Houston, Texas on June 5, 2008.
Born in Middleton, Tennessee on September 11, 1922, she was preceded in death by her parents, Milow and Wilma Scott, her sister, Rubye Sullivan, her brother, Carson Scott, and her husband, Woodrow (Woody) R. Bates.
Mrs. Bates graduated from Middleton High School in 1941 before moving to Memphis. She was especially proud of what she considered her “time in service†as a riveter building B-25 bombers for Fisher Aircraft in Memphis during WWII while her husband served overseas. In subsequent years, she worked at Goldsmith’s, owned her own clothing store, and later returned to retailing with Lord & Taylor and Dillard’s.
She is survived by her son, Michael Bates, of Houston, and two grandchildren, Lauren Bates, of Nashville, and Evan Bates, of Athens, Georgia. The two grandchildren were her principal avocation in late life.
She also leaves a niece, Sheri Moore, of Huntsville, Alabama, and two nephews, Woody Sullivan, of Memphis, and Bob Scott, of San Antonio, Texas.
