ODESSIA BURRESS AUSTIN
Henderson, TN: Odessia Burress Austin age 99 passed away Wednesday March 9, 2016 at her home.
She was born December 27, 1916 near Pinson Tennessee, daughter of the late Robert and Gertie Sells Burress. She graduated from the Pinson School and was married to V.R. “Red” Austin on December 21, 1938. Mr. & Mrs. Austin owned and operated the Electric Grill in Henderson for over thirty-seven years. Mrs. Austin served on the Henderson City Board of Alderman from October 1980 until September 2000, serving as Vice Mayor for eighteen of those twenty years. She also had served as the Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Henderson and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Austin enjoyed gardening and was very proud of her grandsons and great grandsons.
Mrs. Austin is survived by a son, Tony Austin of Nashville; three grandsons, Mark, Scott, and Steve Austin and three great grandsons, Tyler, Coltin, and Zachary Austin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, V.R. “Red” Austin in 2005; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Austin in 2006, two brothers Enloe and G.L. Burress and four sisters, Thelma Seaton, Velma Burress, Gertrude Cothern, and Tauso Branch.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Johnson Chapel with Larry McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow in Henderson City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Johnson Chapel Friday 5PM – 8PM
