Nathaniel J. “Mac†McManus, 79, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, died Thursday, July 6, 2006 at Life Care Center of Hilton Head.
The husband of Carolyn Kearney McManus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Kearney of Bolivar, he was a sales and marketing executive in the chemical industry for 42 years. He was born October 2, 1926 in Cleveland, son of the late Nathaniel and Helen Bernard McManus, was raised in Long Island, N.Y. and graduated from Xavier Academy in New York City before attending Virginia Military Institute. He forged many lifelong friendships at VMI and remained an active alumnus until his death. Mr. McManus served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He worked for American Cyanamid in Bound Brook, N.J. while earning a master’s in business administration from Columbia University in 1956. He spent most of his life in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania before retiring to Hilton Head with his wife in 1996. He enjoyed golfing, gardening and socializing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Sarah McManus of Pittsburgh; daughter, Kate McManus of San Francisco; daughter and son-in-law, Karen Swope and Brent Simonsen of Atlanta; Kevin Swope of Atlanta and grandchildren, Robin and Avery Swope and Alyona Simonsen.
