Ms. Sipes died Thursday evening, October 11 at her home following an extended illness. She was retired from teaching second grade for 26 years, having taught 11 years at Bolivar and 15 years at Whiteville.
She was the daughter of the late Theodore A. and Ruby Lee Brumbelow Whitehurst and lived all of her life in Hardeman County. She received her Bachelor of Science from Lambuth University and attended Memphis State University. She was active in the 'Project Head Start' program in 1966 and loved decorating, drawing house plans, writing poetry and shopping. Married to Dell Sipes for 29 years, she was a member of Bolivar First Baptist Church where she participated in the Golden Sounds Choir and traveled with the Senoir Group on trips.
Survivors include a daughter, Janeen Sipes McGlinchey and her husband, Michael, of Bolivar; a brother, Jimmy Whitehurst of Hornsby; Judy Whitehurst of Memphis, the widow of her deceased twin brother, Billy; two grandchildren, Rachel Leigh Sipes, Dustin Thomas McGlinchey; a great grandchild, Anna McGlinchey; her beloved dog 'Maxx'; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
