He was born and reared in McNairy County, the son of the late Thomas Manley and Vera Marie McCoy Harwell. He grew up in the Enivlle, Milledgeville area and attended school at Enville. He farmed as a young man and entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in Korea in the combat engineers. He was discharged in 1954. He worked in Peoria, IL at Caterpiller for 13 years and returned to Memphis and worked at Exxon-Shell Service Station and retired in 1988.
He is survived by two sisters Mable Allen of Memphis, Marine McComb of Enville. He was preceded in death by a brother Faye Harwell in 2003 and a sister Allie Cagle in 2004.
