Mittie Gooch Atkins died December 27, 2005, at her home with her family beside her. The life-long resident of Michie was born July 12, 1913, to Wylie Terry and Glendera (Latta) Gooch. An avid basketball player in high school, she graduated in 1931 and married her high school sweetheart, Roy Leo Atkins on October 17, 1936. She worked with her father and siblings at W. T. Gooch General Merchandise until its closure in 1970 and followed in the footsteps of her father and brother by serving as Postmaster of the Michie Post Office from 1973 until her retirement in 1980. A member of the Michie Primitive Baptist Church, Mrs. Atkins devoted her life to serving the Lord and caring for her family.
“Miss Mittie†as she was known throughout the community was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brothers and sisters, Eunice Gooch, Elmer Gooch, Velmer Gooch, Zilphia Gooch Sandstrum, and Victoria Gooch Stewart.
Survivors include her sister Martha Gooch Dicus of Michie; sisters-in-law Myra Atkins of Acton, TN; and Dorothy Atkins of Corinth, MS; nieces and nephews Carolyn Gooch, Oak Ridge, TN; Charles Stewart, Jr., Palo Alto, CA; Dianne Dicus Boatman, Corinth; Cornelia Atkins Counce (Ray), Acton; Gloria Atkins Brown (James), Acton; Barbara Sue Atkins Weaver (Jackie), Selmer, TN; Hoyt Atkins (Eloise), Pulaski, TN; Malcolm Atkins (Christine), Nashville, TN; Donald Dickerson, Charlotte, NC; Lyle Dickerson (Jane), Corinth; Michael Dickerson (Susan), Corinth; Becky Dickerson Burkhalter, Corinth; Dick Atkins (Betty), Corinth; Jane Robertson Kaup, Corinth; Virginia Robertson Llewellyn (David), Anchorage, AK; and Ann Robertson Thomas (Howard), Savannah, TN.
