Miriam Fay Bowmar, 82, formerly of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the Riverside Rest Home in Dover following a period of failing health.
She was born August 10, 1926 in Michie, TN a daughter of the late Julius Y. and Mattie (Jordan) Bolding. Raised on a farm near the Shiloh National Park, she was a true “Southern Belle†who never lost her Southern accent. She had also resided Mississippi, Texas, Florida and Massachusetts.
Mrs. Bowmar came to Portsmouth in 1971 when she and her former husband purchased the Wren’s Nest Motel, which her family still owns. She was a gracious hostess and was known for her traditional Southern cooking, laughter, and happy disposition. She enjoyed meeting new people and was always ready to listen and give a lending ear. She had been a caregiver for her mother and several elders in Mississippi, a hairdresser and a telephone operator for Bell South.
She loved being home with her family, music and dancing. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and taught Sunday school at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Orlando, FL.
Family members include two sons, Louis H. Bowmar, III of Somersworth, NH and Gary S. Bowmar of Australia; two daughters Pamela F. VanGeystelan of Lee, NH and Teri J. Brown of Portsmouth, NH; two brothers, James Bolding of Memphis, TN and Douglas Bolding of Warner-Robbins, GA; a sister Peggy Johnsey of Huntsville, AL; her former husband, Louis H. Bowmar, Jr. of West Dennis, MA; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
