Mike Hellums

Mr. Hellums, 59, of Middleton, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Bolivar General Hospital.



The husband of Brenda Hellums, who survives, he was a nuclear engineer who retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1996. He also was a nuclear consultant all over the country until 2002. He was born December 11, 1949, in Memphis, to John E. Hellums, Sr. and the late Edna Hunter Hellums. He graduated from Kingsbury High School in Memphis in 1967 and went on to the University of Memphis and received a Civil Engineering degree. He went to Missile Electronics Training School in Huntsville, Alabama and from 1967 to 1973 was in the US Army and spent one year in Vietnam. Mr. Hellums left Memphis in 1975, spent 25 years in Chattanooga, and lived in Middleton since 2002. Mr. Hellums was involved in the American Legion, an active community volunteer, chairman of the Hardeman County Republican Party, and a past president of the Roger Springs Property Owner's Association. He loved antique cars and was an avid traveler all over the world. He was a member of the Middleton First Baptist Church where he was active in mission trips, taught evangelism class, VBS classes, and involved with the "Angel Food" Ministry at Middleton.



In addition to his wife, whom he married April 29, 1977, and his father, survivors include a daughter, Crystal of Dayton; a son, Jamie of Dayton; a brother, John E. Hellums II of Oakland; an aunt, Ann Edwards of Middleton; two nephews, Trey Hellums of Asheville, NC, Dustin Hellums of Memphis; a great nephew, Jack Hellums; and four grandchildren.
