Melford H. (Les) Lester

June 19, 1919 — January 9, 2009

Melford H. (Les) Lester, Sr. age 89, of Henderson, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the Chester County Healthcare.



He was born and reared in Prentiss, MS. His family moved to Pinson, TN where he attened Pinson School. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 16 and moved to Norris, TN where he assisted in the construction of Norris Dam State Park. He joined the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific in WWII. He retired from the Navy after 20 years and joined the maintenance department at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital. He lived in Beech Bluff, TN for many years before moving to the Oaks in Jackson, TN. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, The Order of the Eastern Star, the Jackson Shrine Club, and the American Legion.



He is preceded in death by his wife, Lois Webber Lester; son, Melford H. Lester, Jr.; sister Eugenia Smith; and brother, Hugh Allen Smith.



He is survived by his sister, Ursal Maness of Jackson; daughter Margaret Holmes of Knoxville; and four grandchildren, Lois Ann and Bill Lester of Jackson, Leslie Mattingly of Charleston, South Carolina, and Scott Holmes of Durham, North Carolina; and five great grandchildren.
