Maxine Smith Carothers Mathis was born November 12, 1922 in Chester County, Tennessee the daughter of the late Lee and Ada Cupples Smith.
She was united in marriage to Roy Andrew Carothers in January of 1942. Mr. Carothers preceded her in death on October 3, 1964. On May 25, 1974, she was united in marriage to Mark David Mathis. Mr. Mathis died on May 29, 2009.
Maxine was a former owner and operator of Roy's Cafe in Selmer, Tennessee and had also worked for Brown Shoe Company in Selmer. She was a member of the Court Avenue Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Selmer, and was active in the Ladies' Auxillary.
Maxine departed this life on May 29, 2009 in Hardeman County, Tennessee at the age of 86 Years, 6 Months, 17 Days. She is survived by two sons: Ray Alton Carothers of Houston, TX and Lawrence David Mathis of Selmer, TN; a daughter, Lisa (Mathis) Shearon and husband Ben of Jackson, TN; a grandchild, Ray Anthony Carothers and wife Tanya of Bay Town, TX; a great-grandchild, Colton Shane Carothers of Bay Town, TX; three sisters: Linda (Smith) Koster and husband Charles of Henderson, TN, Imogene Harris and husband Ward of Henderson, TN, and Shirley Edmondson and husband Frank of Arlington, VA; a brother, Edward Smith and wife Ruth of Selmer, TN; and a host of extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by three brothers: Waymon Smith, Jerry Smith, and James Smith.
