Mary E. Johnson
was born in Wayne County, Tennessee on March 18, 1914 the daughter of Charlie and Beatrice McGee.
On March 22, 1936 she married Ellis Edwin Johnson, who preceded her in death October 1977. There wasn't many days she did not say she missed him in the past 33 years.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Second Creek Church of Lutts, Tennessee. During her last three years when her memory sometimes faded, she could always sing the words of all her favorite hymns and sang them often. She loved the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Was she perfect, no, but she served a Savior who is. Mary was a devoted wife and mother of her children. She was a hard working woman and had a garden past her 90th birthday. When asked by her daughter why she still ran the rotor tiller, she replied, that's what keeps me going. When asked how she lived so long she would reply, you must have a purpose in life. For those who would pass her home during the summer, you would see the beauty of her flowers she loved. She enjoyed sharing those with anyone who would ask. She always had a garden when her children would visit. She would always fill their car full of her vegetables.
If you would ask any of her grandchildren, what they remember most of Grandma Johnson, they would say, visiting her and the fun they had, the good food she cooked and her most famous statement,"now be good" when the noise level was above her approval. When leaving she would always give that same advice.
Mrs. Johnson departed this life on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama from complications from the flu and a broken hip. She was 94 years, 22 days.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her children: Faye Nell Swinney of Grandbury, Texas, Hazel Marie Harris of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Charles Edwin Johnson of Osceola, Indiana, Perry Z. Johnson of Lutts, Tennessee, Jearldine Pennington of Huntsville, Alabama, Mavilene Goodman of Memphis, Tennessee, Ralph E. McGee of Osceola, Indiana; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son: Aaron Glen Johnson; 2 brothers: Ellie McGee and Billie McGee; 2 sisters: Sarah Brannon and Clotea Chammel.
She will be missed by all her family, yet they have that blessed hope we will see her again in Heaven. She now is at peace with the Lord and she is with Ellis.
I believe all her children can call her Blessed this day.
