Mary Jewell Mitchell Jernigan was born October 29, 1927 in Bethel Springs, TN the daughter of the late Marshall Bryan and Effie Jane Henson Mitchell.
She was united in marriage to Lewis Edward Jernigan on May 12, 1945.
Mrs. Jernigan, along with her husband, owned and operated the Piggly Wiggly in Selmer, TN for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Selmer, Tennessee, American Legion Auxiliary, Ladies Gideon Auxiliary and had been chairman of the Pilot Club. She loved to play golf, was an excellent basketball player, enjoyed reading her Bible and attending church.
Some knew her as Mrs. Jernigan or Mrs. Mary but all knew her as a true Southern Lady, who welcomed you with a beautiful smile. She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her life revolved around her faith, her family, and her friends.
Mrs. Jernigan departed this life on July 29, 2013 in Bethel Springs, Tennessee at the age of 85 Years, 9 Months. She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 wonderful years, Lewis Edward Jernigan of Bethel Springs, TN; a daughter, Lindolyn Evans of Memphis, TN; two grandchildren, Leigh Evans of Memphis, TN, Bryan Evans and wife Angela of Germantown, TN; four great grandchildren, Kayla, Grace, Collin, and Grant Evans all of Germantown, TN; son-in-law, Tim Hutcherson of Selmer, TN; two sisters, Effie Carrie Woods of Selmer, TN, Sophronia Ann Robbins of Selmer, TN; a brother, John Douglas Mitchell of Selmer, TN; host of extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jernigan was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha Jean (Jernigan) Hutcherson; son, Lewis Edward Jernigan Jr.; son-in-law, Robert Evans; a sister, Imogene Kiestler; two brothers, Warren Mitchell, James Mitchell.
