Mark David Mathis

Mark David Mathis was born July 7, 1924 in McNairy County, Tennessee the son of the late David Stanford and Lizzie Kelley Mathis.



He was united in marriage to Marlene Johnson on December 4, 1948. Marlene preceded him in death on November 2, 1972. On May 25, 1974, he was united in marriage to Maxine Smith Carothers. Maxine died on May 29, 2009.



Mr. Mathis was an employee for 34 years at the Tennessee Department of Transportation in Bethel Springs, Tennessee. He was a former Deacon for the New Hope Baptist Church in Pocahontas, Tennessee and was attending the Court Avenue Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Selmer, Tennessee with his wife Maxine at the time of his death. Mr. Mathis served his country in the United States Army, European Theater, during World War II.



Mr. Mathis departed this life on May 29, 2009 in Hardeman County, Tennessee at the age of 84 Years, 10 Months, 22 Days. He is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Mathis) Shearon and husband Ben of Jackson, TN; two sons: Lawrence David Mathis of Selmer, TN and Ray Alton Carothers of Houston, TX; a grandchild, Ray Anthony Carothers and wife Tanya of Bay Town, TX; a great-grandchild, Colton Shane Carothers of Bay Town, TX; a twin sister, Martha Henry and husband Edward of Selmer, TN; and a host of extended family and friends.



In addition to his spouses and parents, Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by two sisters: Uila Rogers and Myrtle Dancer.
