She was born and reared in Henderson, TN, the daughter of the late Herbert T. and Allene Croom McCorkle. She attended school in Henderson and graduated Chester County High School in 1931 and attended Freed Hardeman College. In 1932 she was married to Joe A. Melton of Henderson. She was a substitute teacher in the Chester County School System and was Liberian at Chester County Junior High for many years and she was Chester Counties First Liberian when the Public Library opened in 1961 - 1971. She was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church in Henderson, very active in church, served on the official board, taught Sunday school classes and was the church Historian. She was active in P.T.A. of the school system, having served as President and all Committees and as a District Officer as well as the County Council.
In 1978 the Chester County Junior High School P.T.A. awarded “Miss Lucille†an honorary life membership in the Tennessee Congress of Parents and Teachers.
She was an honorary member of the Chester County Library Board and had served as Vice President of the Shiloh Regional Library Board.
She was a member of the Tennessee Education Association.
She was a past President of the Retired Teachers Association and served as Chairman of the Program Committee for more than ten years.
She is survived by a daughter, Billie Gregory of Chattanooga, TN; two grandchildren, Richard Gregory of Chattanooga and Christopher Gregory of Dalton, GA; two great grandchildren; one sister, Jean Simmons of Chattanooga.
Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by her husband Joe A. Melton in 2004 and a sister, Robbie Pennington.
