Lorain Willis McCullar

June 12, 1923 — December 25, 2022

Lorain Willis McCullar was born on June 12, 1923, to Martha "Mattie" Louise Willis and George Daniel Willis. She married John Dolphia McCullar in 1940, and they celebrated 66 years together before his death in 2007. Mrs. McCullar was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six sisters, and two brothers. Her sisters were Ethel Henson, Myrtle Brown, Clevie Steele, Nettie Case, and Mary Browder. Another sister, Aileen, died in childhood. Her brothers were Hugh "Bill" Willis and Russell Willis.

Mrs. McCullar is survived by one daughter, Martha Ann Glover, and her son-in-law Billy J. Glover. She was devoted to three grandchildren: Jim Glover (Stacey) of Brentwood,TN, Molly Glover of Memphis, TN, and Jack Glover (Suzie) of Selmer. She adored her great grandchildren: Sarah Grace (Christian Gallichio) of Athens, GA, Katherine Anne Glover of Biloxi, MS, J.P. Glover (Easton) of Selmer, TN, William Glover (Emily) of Selmer, TN, Matthew Glover (Karissa) of Selmer, TN, Luke Glover of Selmer, TN, and Carter Wyatt of Memphis, TN. The birth of Iyla Glover to William and Emily and Margot Gallichio to Sarah and Christian extended the family over five generations. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved, and many of them knew her as "Aunt Kate."

Soon after the birth of her daughter, she became the typical World War II wife who raised a family and kept the household running until her husband returned safely from the South Pacific in 1946. She loved meeting and greeting people, and she used those skills working in retail stores in downtown Selmer such as Bass Hardware and Gifts, The Honey Tree, and P.J.'s Grocery. She was also known for her hospitality in her home and her love of cross stich and crochet. Many children at St. Jude benefitted from her crocheted caps. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church with membership at Stantonville United Methodist and then Selmer First United Methodist. Currently, she was the oldest member at Selmer First United Methodist.

When she was no longer able to care for herself, she chose to move to Lynnfield Place Assisted Living in Selmer. For three years, she was able to enjoy old friends and make new ones there until her death on December 25, 2022. A celebration of her life will be held on January 21, 2023, at Selmer First United Methodist Church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Selmer First United Methodist Church, to Zimbabwe Missions, or to a charity of your choice.
