Leonard Elmo Johnson

December 25, 1919 — March 30, 2007

Mr. Johnson was born and reared in the Estes Community of Chester County, the son of the late Joe E. and Sarah Ferrell Johnson. He went to school at Harmony. He farmed as a young man and in 1941 was married to Linnie Mae Garner and they made their home in the Estes community.



He entered the Army in 1942 and served in the European Theatre of Operations in Patton’s Third Army in the 378th Infantry. He was wounded in Germany and received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He along with his unit received a letter of commendation for their courage, skill, endurance, and determination from General Patton for their mission in capturing the strongly fortified city of Metz. He returned from the service in November 1945.



After the service he worked at the Milan Arsenal for eight years. He and Linnie owned and operated the Corner Grocery on the corner of Hill and Steed Street in Henderson for eight years.



He began work at Casey Funeral Home in 1967, where he worked in the ambulance service and as a licensed funeral director, and he also managed the Henderson Office Supply. He worked at Casey’s until 1976.



He later was employed as a salesman at Les Reinke Buick in Jackson until he retired in 1985. After his retirement he worked part time at Lofton Chevrolet in Henderson.



He is a 50+ year member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge #485. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He had been a member of the Chester County Lions Club and was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ.



He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Linnie Mae Garner Johnson, and a son Dr. Ronald Johnson and wife Caroline, and two daughters Linda Price and Kay Cromwell all of Henderson. He has seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by four brothers; Everett, Ernest, Elbert, and Edward, and thre sisters; Maggie, Mattie, and Monnie.
