James Leo Watson
James Leo Watson fought his last battle on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 when he departed this life at Henderson Health and Rehabilitation Center three days short of his 97th birthday. He was born May 10, 1916 to Samuel Martin and Mary Etta Williams Watson in Hookers Bend, Tennessee, where he resided until joining the US Army in 1942. He proudly served his country in North Africa, Siscilly, Sardenia, Corsica, Italy, France, Belgium, Alsace, Lorraine, Germany, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia with the 353rd Anti Artillery in the Search Light Battalion, Battery B. He received an honorable discharge on October 12, 1945.
Leo returned home from the service to marry his sweetheart, Pauline Ethel Allen on October 22, 1945 in Corinth, Mississippi. The couple made their home in Pinson where Leo was employed for many years by Marvin Jones Produce Company of Jackson, and later worked for Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
Leo was a member of the Pinson United Methodist Church. He was active in functions and groups in Pinson including the Pinson Ruritan Club where he served in several offices and as District Governor. He enjoyed working with the Scouts in later years. Leo had a love of people, nature, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He loved to tell stories about the Watson family, his army days, and truck driving trips and he had a vast memory of details of the people and events.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother, Russell Watson, and sisters Mary Nell Watson, Evelyn Frazier, and Annie Laura Akin.
He is survived by daughters Judy Lowrance, and husband Larry, of Beech Bluff, and Jane Ellis, and husband David, of Bald Knob, Arkansas, grandchildren David and Emily Helvering of Appleton, Wisconsin and Martin and Madison Lowrance of Pinson, and great granddaughter, Callie Lowrance, also of Pinson, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Jimmy Dyer officiating and burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery at Hookers Bend, TN.
The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday.
