Leland W. Wilmot, Sr., (86), of Union City, formerly of Grand Junction, passed away Sunday, Oct. 1 at Obion County Nursing Home after a period of declining health.
Born July 31, 1920 in Hettinger, North Dakota, he was the son of the late Mabel Mowder Wilmot and William H. Wilmot. A veteran of World War II, he served as a sergeant for the United State Marines Corps, serving in the South Pacific, primarily in Okinawa. He retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority as a senior hydro operator.
He was preceded in death by wife Mary Snellings Wilmot who died in 1993 and wife Clara Scott Nunnally who died in 2003, brothers William H. Wilmot, Jr., and Earl Wilmot. He is survived by three children; daughters Rita Buckles of Union City, Tenn., and Judith Weiland of New York City, and son, Leland Wilmot, Jr. of Nashville; brother Leslie Wilmot of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; John Herron McSwain of Jacksonville, Fla., Claude Christopher Buckles of Louisville, Ky. and Elizabeth Lee Buckles of Charleston, S.C. and one great-grandchild, Lea McSwain of Jacksonville, Fla.; five step-children; Betty Lou Nunnally of Memphis, Bill Nunnally of Greeneville, Tenn., David Nunnally of Southaven, Miss., Jim Nunnally of Houma, La., and Cheryl Moore of Cookeville.
He was a member of the Grand Junction First United Methodist Church. Graveside services were held Friday, Oct. 6 at Grand Junction Cemetery at 2 p.m.
