Josephine Raines

May 29, 1919 — November 30, 2008

JOSEPHINE MAHAFFEY RAINES, age 89 of Knoxville, TN formerly of Grand Junction, TN passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, November 30, with family by her side.



Mrs. Raines was born and raised in Grand Junction until moving to Knoxville 5 years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Grand Junction where she was active in the choir and the Women’s Missionary Union. After moving to Knoxville she attended Bearden United Methodist Church. Mrs. Raines was a retired schoolteacher/librarian from the Hardeman County Schools and was past president of the Grand Junction Library Association. Mrs. Raines attended Blue Mountain College in Mississippi and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Library Science from Memphis State University.



She is preceded in death by her parents, Lucious Elliott Mahaffey and Wilma (Porter) Mahaffey, two infant sons, and a daughter, Susan Rebecca and a sister Joy Evelyn Smith.



She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, James M. Raines of Knoxville; son, James Lee Raines and wife, Patricia of Knoxville; and grandson, Thomas Elliott Raines, of Knoxville.



Funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church, Grand Junction at 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 2, 2008 with interment immediately afterward at the Grand Junction Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Junction Baptist Church or the Grand Junction Cemetery Association.
