Mr. Russell died Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born to the late Marlett and Nettie Jones Russell in Middleton on October 8, 1920 and was a life-long resident of Hardeman County. He was a graduate of Middleton High School and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Martin, Lambuth and Union Universities. During WW2, he was the flight engineer on a B-24 Liberator in the Army Air Force and served as a Tech Sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Russell received the Distinguished Flying Cross and was awarded the Air Medal five times. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW.
For 30 years, Mr. Russell taught general building trade (GBT) with the Hardeman County Schools. In 1972, his class restored and repaired the Hardeman County Courthouse clock. Antique clock repair was one of his favorite past times. Mr. Russell also served as City of Bolivar building inspector for 24 years and also served the city and county on various boards throughout the years.
He leaves as his survivors his wife, Sue Sykes Russell of Bolivar; his daughter Dezanne Russell of Goodlettsville, TN; his brother, John Russell of Bolivar; honorary grandchildren, Mary Anderson, Hannah and Sophia Hall. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Odell Russell and Shirley Marsh and a brother, Lanoe Russell.
