Mr. Shanks won his battle with cancer and left this world to be with the Father on August 12, 2008. He was born to Alice and Charles Shanks in Memphis who both preceded him in death. He married his first love, Charlotte Reed shanks on November 20, 1958. He left three hcildren, who he was so proud of, Lisa Shanks of Bessemer, AL, Teresa Holmes of Oakland and Ron and LeeAnne Shanks of Cary, NC. He had 5 beautiful grandchildren, whom he adored; Kevin and Stacy Weaber of Oakland, Rachel and Pete Mayer of Cordova, Evan Shanks of Bessemer, AL, Elliott Shanks of Cary, NC and Josephine Shanks of Cary, NC. He left one precious great granddaughter, Ella Grace Weaver. He also left behind one brother, John Shanks of Memphis and three sisters, Sue Shockley of West Memphis, AR, Ruth Hinson of Marion, AR and Charlotte and James Daniels of West Memphis, AR. He was preceded in death by two sisters, LaVee Secrease and Iris Paluso. He loved his family and friends and was like a father to many and a friend to all.
He served his country proudly for 20 years in the US Navy, serving on the aircrafts, USS Independence, the Forrestal, the Midway, the Saratogo, the Shangrala and the Nimitz. He made many sacrifices for his country and his family. He retired and moved to Grand Valley Lakes, where he was able to play as much golf as sun would allow and do all the things he never had time for when he worked. He enjoyed his retirement.
