First Sergeant John T. Potter, Retired
Henderson, TN; John Thomas Potter, age 78, died September 22, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Potter was born and reared in Maryville, TN, the son of the late William Leslie and Ida Mae Teffeteller Potter. He attended Walland High School and entered the U.S. Army in 1947 and served 5 ½ years at the Panama Canal in an anti-aircraft battalion and was discharged in 1954. He entered the TN National Guard in 1955 and served at Maryville, TN and transferred to the Henderson Unit in 1960, serving their until his retirement in 1995.
He came to Henderson as a Radio Advisor and then served as First Sergeant, Headquarters Company, Fourth Battalion, 117th Infantry, Tennessee Army National Guard. He was selected the “Outstanding Soldier of the Year†1977 of the 4th Armored Rifle Battalion, 117th Infantry at Fort Stewart, GA. Among many of his other commendations were: The Army Commendation Medal from Adjutant General Carl Wallace in 1982. He was an honor student at the U. S. Army Ordnance School in Aberdeen, Maryland and had received numerous awards in Army Small Arms Competitions.
He had farmed at Jacks Creek for many years and had worked as an electrical, plumbing and HVAC contractor in the Henderson area, building many houses in this area. He had served as a baseball umpire for several years. He was a member of the Middlefork Road Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Cable Potter of Luray; a son, Blake Potter and his wife Rhonda of Medon; two daughters, Cindy Haman and husband Henry of Luray and Ginger Jahnkow and husband Mike of Enville; four grandchildren; Brett Potter, Summar Jahnkow, Taylor Stovall, and Matthew Jahnkow, one God-Daughter Judy Hale and husband Ricky of Jackson and six sisters; Ann Walker of Maryville, TN, Bernice Garner of Maryville, Erma Sue Burchfield of Alcoa, TN, Sara Elizabeth Burno of Chicago, IL, Jean Everett of Maryville and Mary Frances Price of Walland, TN.
He was preceded in by five brothers.
