John “Opa” Michale Phillips, age 63, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma December 1, 1956 to T/Sgt. James Wade Phillips (Airforce) and the late Elisabeth Mendl Phillips, John grew up in various places around the world. He graduated McNairy Central High School in 1974, and served four years in the U.S. Navy as a Radio Man Second Class Petty Officer on the USS Hector.
He was employed for 23 years at Proctor and Gamble, and E&T Construction for 7 years before retiring.
On September 22, 1995, John married the love of his life, Debi Hopper and made their home in Henderson, TN. John loved the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, bee keeping, was an avid gardener, as well as being a skilled carpenter. His prized lifetime achievements were his grandchildren who lovingly called him “Opa.”
He was a member of Old Friendship Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Debi “Oma” Hopper Phillips, son Noah R. Phillips, daughter Rebecca C. Gowens (Matthew) of Leavenworth, KS, his father James Wade Phillips and wife Ruth Ann, four grandchildren; Loralai, Olivia, Casper “Buddy”, and Gideon “Bear” Gowens, four sisters; Judy Crowe (Bob) of Finger, Yvonne Johnson of Henderson, Anita Hawkins (Wes), of Sacramento, CA and Esther Phillips of Houston, TX; father-in-law Roy Hopper and wife Kathy of Vero Beach, FL, brother-in-law Christopher Hopper (Tara) of John’s Creek, GA; along with a multitude of niece’s, nephew’s and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Elisabeth Mendl Phillips, a brother Bob Phillips and a sister, Irene Phillips.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday evening June 16th, 5:00PM at Old Friendship Baptist Church with Bro. Iran Smith officiating.
Honorary Pallbearers: Noah Phillips and Matthew Gowens.
The family will receive friends at the church from 3:00PM until 5:00 PM Tuesday.
Military Honors will be at 5:00 PM.
