John Parry Hughes, age 73 of Hickory Valley, died peacefully at home Monday, September 8, 2008.
He was born May 17, 1935 in Brockton, MA to the late Felix Albert and Martha Larson Hughes. He graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1953 and enlisted in the U. S. Navy the following year. His eight years of service was aboard three submarines, including the USS Clamagore, the USS Threadfin and the USS Marlin, with tours to the Suez Canal and the North Atlantic.
He worked 26 years with the South Florida Water Management District where he managed a pumping station within the Florida Everglades.
On August 7, 1958, he married Mary Anne Shearin in Kingsland, GA. They lived in South Florida for 30 years where he enjoyed deep sea fishing and boating. After retirement, the couple moved to Hickory Valley, where he raised Angus cattle before changing to the breeding of Tennessee Walking Horses for seventeen years and enjoyed showing halter led colts.
He was a member of the Ames Plantation Historical Society and served as a volunteer at the Bird Dog Foundation and Sporting Dog Center in Grand Junction. He was a member of the Holmes United Methodist Church of Hickory Valley.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother, Richard E. Hughes and his wife Loretta of Groveport, OH, and a sister-in-law, Alene Hughes of Port Aransas, TX. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Albert E. Hughes.
