JOHN D. HARRIS, JR.
Henderson, TN: John D. Harris, Jr. age 85 passed away January 23, 2013 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
He was born and raised in the Montezuma Community in Chester County, the son of the late John D. and Versie Deming Harris. He attended schools in Chester County and volunteered to serve in the Navy during WWII (1944-46) and the Korean War (1950-52). After returning from active naval service, John attended Freed-Hardeman College and then served as an electronics technician with the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), retiring after 26 years. After retirement from the FAA, he owned and operated a real estate office in Henderson for several years. He also served in the Naval Reserve for 30 years, retiring as Chief Petty Officer.
John was a member of the Malesus Methodist Church, serving as Youth Fellowship leader for several years. He was also a long-time member of the Jackson Optimist Club, serving as president for two terms.
He leaves his wife of 66 years, Mary Kelley Harris and one son, John Dennis Harris of Henderson; a brother, Deming Harris and two sisters, Willa Dean McKnight and Virginia Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wanda Lovelace.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday January 25, 2013 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Ray Chandler officiating and burial will follow in Sweetlips Cemetery in Chester County.
