John E. Dunwoody

John E. Dunwoody was born October 29, 1927 in Newark, Ohio the son of the late Edward Samuel and Rosella Barr Dunwoody.



He was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Simmons on July 7, 1977.



Mr. Dunwoody was retired from the City of Memphis Fire Department. He also worked at Baptist Hospital as Lieutenant of Security, was a Bartlett fireman and police officer, and was an owner/trainer with the Christian Harness Horseman Association. He also served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II. While serving in the Army he earned his GED, but his paperwork was lost. Finally, at the young age of 72, he received his GED, making him the oldest person in McNairy County to earn his diploma. Above all else, he loved his wife, children and grandchildren.



Mr. Dunwoody departed this life on Monday, March 1, 2010 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 82 years, 4 months, and 2 days. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Phyllis Ann Young Dunwoody of Adamsville, TN; two daughters: Kathy Barrowman of Montgomery, AL and Rosamary Duncan of Palm Coast, FL; a son, Johnny L. Dunwoody of Adamsville, TN; two step-daughters: Debbie Escarre and Patti Young, both of Memphis, TN; two step-sons: retired Master Sergeant Randall Alan Young of Columbus, MS and Gary Michael Young of Collierville, TN; a sister, Helen Irene Flippin of Lubbock, TX; a step-sister, Lisa (Dunwoody) Carr of Newark, OH; two half-brothers: Elsworth Dunwoody and Ed Dunwoody, both of Newark, OH; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Sheriff Bill Drewell of Lubbock, TX; and 2 great- nephews.



In addition to his parents, Mr. Dunwoody was preceded in death by a half-sister, Mary Agnes Backenstaff, and two brothers: William Roy Dunwoody and Eddie Keith Dunwoody.
