John David Clayton, Sr.

John David Clayton, Sr. was born September 7, 1937 in Finger, TN the son of the late Albert H. and May Mitchel Clayton.

He was united in marriage to Frances Strain on March 21, 1959.

Mr. Clayton attended elementary school in Finger and high school in Bethel Springs, where he played basketball.  He was a right-of-way foreman for Pickwick Electric Cooperative in Selmer, retiring after 38 years of service.  Mr. Clayton was a faithful member of Old Friendship Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon.  He was a strong Republican and served on the McNairy County Republican Committee for approximately 20 years.  Traveling to the Great Smoky Mountains with his family, cheering for the Tennessee Volunteers, and taking his grandsons squirrel hunting and fishing were among his favorite activities.    

Mr. Clayton departed this life on June 23, 2023 at his home in Bethel Springs, Tennessee at the age of 85 Years, 9 Months, 16 Days.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances (Strain) Clayton of Bethel Springs, TN; a son, Barry Lynn Clayton and companion Hollie; two grandchildren, Albert Lynn Clayton and wife April and Trey Clayton; and many extended family and friends.  

In addition to his parents, Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by a son, John David Clayton, Jr.; four sisters: Marie Collie, Willie Albert Garner, Jewell Lynch, and Anna Anderson; and four brothers: Murray Clayton, Hoyte Clayton, Billy Clayton, and Gayle Clayton.
