Joe Shields, 54, of Bolivar, died Thursday evening, May 11, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.
The husband of Alice Hannis Shields, who survives, he was a Captain of the Bolivar Fire Department and was the first Fire Marshal for the City of Bolivar. Mr. Shields was born August 6, 1951 in Grand Junction, son of the late Archie Hubert Shields and Opal Irene Irwin Shields and lived here all of his life. He dedicated himself to serving the City of Bolivar for 34 years. Mr. Shields was the first State Certified Inspector for the City of Bolivar, was a National Certified Fire Inspector and was instrumental in helping arson inspectors solve cases. He began the Blueprint Program for the safety of old buildings and firemen and was concerned about the safety of individuals during public gatherings. He had a long-term relationship with Fire Marshals all over the state and started the annual banquet for the firemen’s wives and city officials. Mr. Shields enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors and taught country music line dancing. He was a member of Dixie Hills Baptist Church.
Services were 2:00 PM Monday, May 15, 2006 at Shackelford’s Bolivar chapel with Jimmy Garrett, Father Carl Hood and Tommy Hall officiating. Burial was in Big Springs Cemetery near Medon.
In addition to his wife, whom he married July 2, 1971, survivors include one daughter, Brandie Shields and one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Amanda Shields, all of Bolivar; four sisters, Vickie Head of Selmer, Pat Burkley of Medon, Debbie King of Bolivar and Tracy Burnette of Middleton; two step-sisters, Ann Brown of Bolivar and Lisa Lawrence of Memphis; two step-brothers, Mike and Jerry Cothran, both of Henderson; his step-mother, Mildred Shields of Bolivar and two grandsons, Billy “Billy Jack†Watson and Christian “Tojo†Shields.
