He was born and reared in McNairy County, the son of the late Helen Griffin Henry Whitaker and step father the late Bert Whitaker. He graduated Bethel Springs High School in 1965. He was married to Carolyn Johnson in 1966. They made their home in the Old Finger Road Community. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 until 1968 and was stationed at Fort Polk, LA and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Most of his life he worked as a licensed plumber, having worked several years as a plumber at Freed Hardeman. They owned and operated City Hardware in Henderson. He then worked for Porter Paint in Jackson as store manager. He then worked with his son Jason at Robertson's Fire Arms and Pawn Shop.
