He was born and reared in Jackson, TN the son of the late Lewis Thurman and Lillious Davidson Cox. He attended Jackson High School and graduated from Columbia Military Academy. He entered the U.S. Navy, February 3, 1953 and was stationed at New Port, Rhode Island assigned to security and returned in February 1955. He attended U.T. Knoxville for three years and returned to Jackson and worked for Illinois Central Railroad until 1962. He worked Cudahy Packing Company and Sears Terminal Freight in Memphis. He started with Mid America Distributions in 1968 and stayed seven years, working as Vice President and General Manager. He moved to Jackson and started J & S Fire Extinguisher Service.
He was married to Shirley Bolton Pratt in 1976. They operated J & S Fire Extinguisher Service and Sonic Drive Inn in Henderson. Mrs. Cox died in 2005. He continued to make
his home in Jackson.
He is survived by three sons, Jere Cox, Jr. and wife JoAnna of Henderson, Jim Cox and wife Kim of Jackson and David Cox and wife Judy of Pulaski; two daughters, Melissa Ann Dwyer of Memphis and Suszanne McCartney of Oxford, MS; step children, Pepper Pratt and wife Karen of Jackson, Melanie Hudson and husband Bart of Henderson and Cindi Richardson and husband Ronnie of Arlington, TN.
